Digital Vernier Caliper

Your data

Privacy policy

This policy explains what digitalverniercaliper.com does and does not do with information about you. The short version: the site has no accounts, no login and no database, it asks you for nothing, and the only things it stores are two settings kept on your own device.

Last updated

In one paragraph

We do not ask for your name, email address or any other personal detail to use the simulator. Nothing you do with the caliper — the measurements you take, the practice answers you give — leaves your browser. Two preferences (your light/dark theme choice and your screen calibration) are saved in your browser's local storage on your own device, and we cannot read them. The site sets no cookies of its own. Your browser does, however, fetch fonts from Google, which means Google's servers see your IP address.

Who we are

digitalverniercaliper.com is a free educational website operated by an individual, not a company. In data protection terms that individual is the data controller for this site. Contact details are in the Contact section below.

This policy covers the website at digitalverniercaliper.com and its subdomains. It does not cover any other site you reach by following a link from here.

What we collect

The site is a static website. There is no server-side application, no database and no user account system, so there is no mechanism by which we could build a profile of you even if we wanted one. Specifically, we do not collect:

  • — your name, email address, phone number or postal address;
  • — any account, login or password, because there are none;
  • — the measurements you take or the practice answers you give;
  • — your location beyond what an IP address implies to the services below;
  • — payment details, because nothing here is for sale.

Like every website, the server that delivers these pages processes a request log — IP address, timestamp, the page requested, your browser's user-agent string — which is generated automatically by the hosting provider and used for delivering the site, diagnosing faults and preventing abuse. We do not use those logs to identify individuals.

What is stored on your device

The site saves two values in your browser's local storage. Local storage is not a cookie: it is never transmitted with requests, so these values stay on your device and are not readable by us or by anyone else.

Theme preference

Whether you chose light, dark or "follow my system". Stored so the site does not flash the wrong colour scheme on your next visit.

Screen calibration

A single number describing how many screen pixels correspond to a millimetre, saved only if you use the optional calibration control. It says nothing about you; it describes your display.

You can remove both at any time by clearing site data for this domain in your browser settings. Doing so costs you nothing but the two preferences.

Cookies

At the time of writing, this site sets no cookies of its own— not for analytics, not for advertising, not for preferences. That is why you are not being shown a cookie banner: there is currently nothing to consent to.

If that changes — see Advertising and analytics — this section will be updated before the change goes live, and where the law requires consent for non-essential cookies you will be asked for it first.

Third parties

Two third parties are involved in delivering this site to you.

Google Fonts

The site's typefaces are loaded from Google's font servers. To deliver them your browser connects directly to fonts.googleapis.com andfonts.gstatic.com, which means Google receives your IP address, the referring page and basic browser information. Google states that these requests are not used to create advertising profiles and that font requests do not set cookies. This is the one third-party connection every visitor makes.

Hosting provider

The site's files are served by a commercial hosting provider, which processes the standard request logs described above on our behalf and in order to serve the pages you asked for.

Some of these providers operate servers outside the UK and EEA, so serving you a page may involve an international transfer of the request data described above. Such transfers rely on the safeguards those providers put in place, typically standard contractual clauses.

Advertising and analytics

Current status

No advertising and no analytics currently run on this site.

The site is free to use and costs money to run, so advertising or privacy-respecting analytics may be introduced in future. This section describes how that would work, so that the terms are set out in advance rather than announced afterwards.

Analytics

If visitor measurement is added, it would be used only to understand which pages are useful and where people get stuck — aggregate page views, referrers and broad device categories. It would never be used to identify an individual visitor or to follow you across other websites.

Advertising

If advertising is added, it would be served by a third-party ad network — most likely Google, through AdSense. Where that happens, the following would apply:

  • — Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites.
  • — Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the internet.
  • — You may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings, or opt out of a third-party vendor's use of cookies for personalised advertising at aboutads.info.
  • — Ad networks set their own cookies and are independent data controllers for what they collect. Their own privacy policies govern that processing, not this one.
  • — Where the law requires consent for advertising cookies, you would be asked before any are set, and you would be able to change your answer later.

Until any of that happens, the statement at the top of this section stands: nothing of the kind runs here today.

Email you send us

If you write to us at hello@digitalverniercaliper.com, your message and address are held in an ordinary mailbox and used solely to reply to you and, where relevant, to fix what you reported. Correspondence is not added to any mailing list, not used for marketing and not sold or shared. It is kept only as long as it is useful — in practice, up to two years — and you can ask for it to be deleted sooner.

Where the UK GDPR or EU GDPR applies, the limited processing described above rests on our legitimate interest in delivering, securing and improving a free educational website, and — for email — on our legitimate interest in answering people who contact us. Any non-essential cookies introduced in future would rest on consent instead.

Server logs are retained for a short period by the hosting provider under its own retention schedule. Local storage values persist on your device until you clear them.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict or object to the processing of your personal data, to receive a copy of it in a portable form, and — under laws such as the California Consumer Privacy Act — to know what is collected and to opt out of its sale. We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising.

In practice there is very little to exercise these rights against, because we hold almost nothing: unless you have emailed us, we hold no personal data about you at all. To make a request, write to hello@digitalverniercaliper.com. If you are in the UK or EEA and are unhappy with the response, you have the right to complain to your national data protection authority.

Children

The simulator is used by school students, and it is designed to be safe for them: it requires no account, asks for no personal information and collects nothing about the person using it. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal information by email, write to us and it will be deleted.

Changes to this policy

This policy may be updated as the site changes. The date at the top of the page always shows when it was last revised. Material changes — in particular the introduction of analytics or advertising — will be reflected here before they take effect, not after.
